Los primeros Cisitalia construidos fueron unos pequeños monoplazas diseñados por Dante Giacossa y denominados D46. Iban dotados de componentes mecánicos provenientes del FIAT 1100S que convenientemente preparados aumentaban considerablemente su potencia hasta alcanzar los 70cv, lo que sumado a su extrema ligereza, menos de 400 Kg, les permitían obtener un gran rendimiento competitivo en las carreras. El siguiente paso fue producir un coche sport de carretera: el mítico Cisitalia 202 berlinetta. Cuando se presentó por primera vez al público, en Villa d’Este en Italia y en el Salón del Automóvil de París de 1947, el Cisitalia 202 fue un éxito rotundo que marcó la pauta a seguir en lo referente al diseño de las carrocerías después de la guerra. El extraordinario diseño, creado por Pininfarina para Cisitalia, fue honrado en 1951 por el Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York para formar parte de su colección. Denominado como “la escultura rodante”, todavía forma parte del MOMA en su colección permanente. El modelo que hoy nos ocupa y hemos reproducido se corresponde a una de las tres unidades que la fábrica preparó para correr la Mille Miglia del año 1948. Las tres unidades estaban inscritas por la Squadra Piero Dusio con dorsales #15 para G. Scagliarini – C. Maffiodo #107 para A. Machieraldo – G. Castelli y #540 para Tredici-L. Garrone. La carrera fue una exhibición de coraje por parte del mítico Tazio Nuvolari, que con un Ferrari 166 inscrito a última hora, dominó la prueba holgadamente hasta que diversos problemas mecánicos y físicos por la enfermedad del piloto, dejaron en bandeja la victoria a su compañero de marca Biondetti. Al final de la prueba los Cisitalia Berlinetta encabezados por el dorsal #15 de Scagliarini-Maffiodo, tras una dura pugna con los rápidos FIAT 1100S se tuvieron que conformar con un meritorio 5º puesto scratch que confirmaba las excelentes prestaciones de la pequeña berlinetta en su primera participación en carrera.
