This has puzzled Beatles gear nerds for years, and I don't have an answer as to why the tones are so crunchy. One explanation was that they had to play much louder on the rooftop outdoors, driving the Twin's preamps. Another theory is that their amps were early UK imported prototypes of the Silverface line of Fender amps, which had a different circuit I'm achieving this crunch by using boost pedals into my 1974 Fender Pro Reverb, a very similar amp to their Twin Reverbs. I'm plugged into the vibrato channel, set clean on volume 3 John used the bridge pickup of his Casino, but rolled the tone knob down almost all the way For my cover I also am on the bridge pickup.
